2026年3月25日（水）から26日（木）にかけて、厚生労働省主催「Japan Biotech Showcase & Symposium 2026」を開催いたしました。本シンポジウムは、日本発の革新的な医療技術の社会実装を促進するとともに、創薬系スタートアップを中心としたエコシステムの強化および国際連携の推進を目的として実施いたしました。

本シンポジウムでは、政府関係者、アカデミア研究者、製薬企業、ベンチャーキャピタル（VC）など、多様なステークホルダーにご参加いただき、日本の創薬スタートアップを取り巻く現状と課題、ならびに今後の展望について多角的な議論を行いました。また海外より著名なベンチャーキャピタル20社を招聘し、特にグローバル市場を見据えた資金調達や事業開発、海外VCとの連携といったテーマについて、活発な意見交換が行われました。

初日は、2025年ノーベル生理学・医学賞受賞者の坂口志文氏による基調講演に始まり、日本のバイオテック産業の現状や政策動向について紹介しました。その後のパネルディスカッションでは、国内外の投資家や製薬企業の視点から、日本の創薬スタートアップが国際競争力を高めていくための課題と対応の方向性について議論が深まりました。

2日目には、グローバル臨床試験の最新動向や創薬の将来像に関する講演を行い、国際的な視点から今後の創薬開発の方向性について共有しました。

本シンポジウムを通じて、日本の創薬スタートアップエコシステムは高い研究力を有する一方、グローバル展開や資金循環の面でさらなる強化が必要であることが改めて認識されました。また、国際的な連携の重要性が一層高まっていることも共有されました。今後は、本シンポジウムを通じて構築されたネットワークや得られた知見を活かし、国内外の関係者との連携を一層深化させ、日本発の革新的な医療技術の社会実装および創薬スタートアップの持続的な成長につなげていきます。

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare hosted the Japan Biotech Showcase & Symposium 2026 from Wednesday, March 25 to Thursday, March 26, 2026. The symposium was held with the aim of promoting the social implementation of innovative medical technologies originating in Japan, while also strengthening the ecosystem centered on drug discovery startups and advancing international collaboration.

The symposium brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including government officials, academic researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and venture capital firms. Participants engaged in multifaceted discussions on the current status, challenges, and future outlook of Japan’s drug discovery startup ecosystem. In addition, 20 prominent overseas venture capital firms were invited, leading to active exchanges of views on topics such as fundraising with a view to global markets, business development, and collaboration with international VCs.

The first day began with a keynote lecture by Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, recipient of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, followed by presentations on the current state of Japan’s biotech industry and relevant policy trends. In the subsequent panel discussion, investors and pharmaceutical companies from Japan and overseas engaged in in-depth discussions on the challenges Japanese drug discovery startups face in enhancing their global competitiveness, as well as possible directions for addressing them.

On the second day, presentations were delivered on the latest trends in global clinical trials and the future outlook for drug discovery, sharing perspectives on the future direction of drug development from an international standpoint.

Through the symposium, it was reaffirmed that while Japan’s drug discovery startup ecosystem possesses strong research capabilities, further strengthening is needed in areas such as global expansion and capital circulation. Participants also shared the view that the importance of international collaboration is becoming even greater. Going forward, we will leverage the networks established and insights gained through this symposium to further deepen collaboration with stakeholders in Japan and abroad, thereby contributing to the social implementation of innovative medical technologies originating in Japan and the sustainable growth of drug discovery startups.
